July 24 – Day 83 Pack Creek area

July 24 – Day 83   Pack Creek area

Up early, low tide this morning.  It clearly rained during the night.  Momma bear and twins are on the beach at Pak Creek at the waterline in front of our boats.  Still a long way away but closer than last night.  They are digging clams and finding other morsels of goodness for breakfast.

Later they moved down the beach and we were able to take the small boat over and get a closer look at the bear family.   The cubs look like 1 year olds.   They were digging clams and having breakfast.  One of the cubs had an itch and kept rubbing on the rocks.  It was fun to watch their process – dig, uncover the clams, bounce on them a few times to break the shells open, then go down and slurp the clam out.  One of the cubs was better at it, while the other seemed to try to eat rocks and kept spitting them out.

The family

Momma

Not sure what happened but Momma bear said something and this cub walked up the beach

and sat in the rocks until it was time to leave.   Likely in 'time out' for something.

Momma and goldilocks still down on the beach

Another shot of 'time out cub'

Shawn managed to get some photos with his cell phone through the large stabilized binoculars.

He got some video that way too, but not posted here.

Another bear down the beach, with pet crows.

Not very large so likely a 3 year old.  Maybe 'kicked out of the house' this year.

The Nelsea guys went out fishing, always looking for that big one.

Today's plan is to go find the Oliver Inlet trail to see if we can get a hike in.  It is raining seriously so who knows if a hike will actually happen.   We will go by small boat and leave the big boats in our current anchorage.  This is where the float plane will be bringing in Carl and Cheryl and picking up Josh, Kimberly, and Shawn tomorrow.  We managed to arrange one plane to do the crew switch.

Shawn next to a beaver dam and tree cut down by the beaver.

The beaver mis-calculated however and the tree fell inland instead of toward the dam.
