Onward toward Glacier Bay

July 5 -  Onward toward Glacier Bay
We are heading out early this morning toward Glacier Bay.    We will not have internet or phone access for a while now so communications will be tough.   I've tried to get as much work done as I could while in Juneau but I'm still not done.   Blogging has taken a back seat, and posting photos, well that has been a problem too.   I will get photos posted when I can.
Other blogs from our fellow travelers ---

  • Nelsea.blogspot.com
  • Minersdebt.blogspot.com
  • www.lindaandnat.com, then click on Alaska, 2013 and, via the down arrow, click on the various pages.

These guys have had more time and some better internet access to be able to work on their blogs.  They are also doing a much better job of writing about things this year.   So remember if they saw it we probably did too!  LOL
I'm trying to get these linked to our blog but so far no luck.

Okay we are still in Juneau and it is 2:30pm.  The plan had been to leave by 9am but Glen found a pipe in the engine room (for the generator --- cooling line I think) with a hole in it.   He called around and found a welder.   Took the pipe out and borrowed the harbormasters car to get the pipe to the welder this morning.   He is currently installing the repaired pipe.   Time will tell if all will work properly.

Our repairs are done and Nat's parts and new crew are aboard.  We pulled out of Juneau at 3:00pm.  Not exactly as early as we had planned.

Juneau addition ----
M/V TOBA from RHYC has been docked just ahead of us on the dock, but the Wilson's (Tom and Barbara) are not here.  Harbor master told us that they have left for home or elsewhere and would not be back until about the 12th.   So we took one of the photos of our traveling group, printed it, wrote all our names on it, with a missed you, hope to see you soon note and slide it through their sliding door.   A note from friends to be waiting for them when they get back to Juneau.
After fixing the generator problem (discovered a hole in the heat exchanger but found a welding shop to replace the fitting) we pulled off the dock about 3pm.

Now if I could only figure out why the photos won't stay right side up when posting to this blog.
Miss you all.   Stay tuned for more of our adventures.

Juneau ---- Happy 4th ------ Fireworks

July 3 - Juneau
Today will be a busy day.  Up early head out to Juneau hoping to arrive about 10am.   Robert and Debbie Schroeder are joining our crew today.   They actually arrived in Juneau late last night and stayed in a hotel.   We'll do a Costco run in Juneau and some tourist stuff.   The fireworks show starts at 12:01 am on July 4th so we'll be up late.
All 5 boats (19 people) had dinner on Magic tonight.  Maryann made a mean spaghetti.   She cooked all day while the rest of us went to Costco etc... to restock.   Having 5 boats to restock meant a lot of people in cabs ..... not a good idea, so we all chipped in and rented a car for the day.   Glen and Tom were the 'official' drivers and took groups up to Costco, Fred Meyer, and the bottle store, etc...   We had the car for 24 hrs so this worked out great.

Pulled into Juneau at 3pm and stayed at the IVF (intermediate vessel float) right near the cruise ships.  Great slip assignment for the fireworks show that started at 00:01am on July 4th and lasted about 25 minutes.   One of the best shows we've seen.
The group rented a car so everyone took turns going up to Costco and Fred Meyer to re-provision, in quantity.
Oh almost forgot ---  TOBA, another RHYC boat is docked in the harbor; the boat directly in front of us to be exact.   But it appears that the Wilson's have gone away for a few days.   I hope to remember to leave them a note before we pull out of town.

July 4 - Juneau
Went into town today to watch the parade and then walk around.  Also out to lunch.   The streets were also full of cruise ship visitors so it was quite lively.  In the afternoon Glen took a group over to Douglas Island to check out the 4th festivities over there.  Maryann stayed back to get some reading etc... done and pack up.  She left us this evening and went to a hotel for the night.  We leave early in the morning and she flys out in the afternoon.  Staying in the hotel will allow her to sleep in and be close to the airport tomorrow.   I also stayed back to try to get some ski patrol work done.  Not having internet and cell service has been a huge pain.   Not only for not being able to get the work done that I want to get done but also because it has meant that I have not been able to do much blog posting.   I'm writing and taking photos but posting has been an almost nonexistent process.

Taku

July 1 - Taku
We left Tracy Cove and all went to Taku.  Saw one whale on the way over, it was doing repeated tail flapping which was fun to watch.  Maryann and I both took photos.   Taku looks much like it did in 2008.
Nicole your rope swing is still here, but you were not here to swing on it.   The group took a walk around the old cannery grounds, and talked to people on the dock.  There are two other boats here having come up on May 8th and 9th from Anacortes; one couple is from Australia and the other from Ashland Oregon.

July 2  - Taku  - Lazy Day
Reflections and Rendezvous pulled out early and went into Juneau.  Miner's Debt should already be there.    Panacea and Magic are just hanging out at the dock in Taku.  It rained in the morning, but reboats came in that are from down south; one a couple from Poulsbo who used to live in Petersburg and another sailboat from Port Townsend, but the couple actually lives in Mukilteo  (almost our neighbors), it is a small world.    Mehlum's spent the day fishing  --- zero fish.   The Magic crew spent the day doing 'house chores' and watching movies ... okay we had a lazy day.
