July 19 – Day 78 Taku to Tracey Cove
There is blue sky and sunshine this morning. A perfect day for glacier viewing. We are anchoring in Tracey Cove which will position us for the trip to the glacier. It is basically the only area shallow and protected enough in this arm for anchoring.
Earlier in the trip we had heard from some other boaters that you could not get closer than 5 miles from the Sawyer Glacier in Tracey Arm. We hope they were wrong.
The Nelson clan jumped into Nellie for the trip up Tracey Arm. The Bidarka crew came aboard Magic and we headed out.
Had a great cruise and saw icebergs of all sizes and shapes. The weather was perfect with sunny blue sky. The water color ranged from dark gray blue to aqua. There were seal families, with babies on the icebergs as well. The reports of the inlet being blocked by ice were wrong. We got right up to the face of both the North and South Sawyer Glaciers. Both have receded quite a bit since 2016. Some sections of the glacier were dark black from rocks, and other parts various shades of dark blue to bright blue to white. Calved a few times with some good sized chunks. One set off a wave that was like a ride at the amusement park. Got some photos of the calving and Shawn got some video, which I hope to find a way to post to this blog. On our way-out Shawn fished for some glacier ice for our beverages. He got us a very nice piece.
A great day was had by all.

These photos give perspective on just how large the glacier is. The boat is approx. 24 ft tall and about 400 feet back from the wall.
