Aug 9 – Day 99 Naha
Nelsea and Bidarka left Naha for Ketchikan in the morning to get there to see Tyler to his plane home. It has been fun to spend a few days with Tyler. Glen and I stayed back so that we could go up the river above the lake, above the waterfall at high tide. Yes, another adventure, and possible bear viewing area as the bear should be feeding on salmon up that way.

My next pic shows the bear on the move. It was the only bear we saw up by the waterfall, and when it saw us it took off running upstream. Rats, we had hoped to watch and video bears catching fish at the waterfall.
Dark spots at the bottom are fish waiting their turn to try going up the waterfall. Good luck with that!

Picky eaters; bears generally only eat the brain, belly, and any roe (eggs), the fatty parts and leave the rest of the fish for the birds.
Bears and humans should work out a deal we get the fish, take the meat, and give the head, belly, and roe to the bears. Everyone would be happy.

I should have taken a plastic bag on this adventure as we saw lots of ripe berries – Salmon Berries, Red and Blue Huckleberries, Blue Berries, and Thimble Berries. All very yummy.

Tide still high enough for us to get out of the lake before the exit becomes a rugged waterfall.
Skid for fishing boats at Naha looks about the same as in past years. Small skiffs can be pulled up and into the lake bypassing the waterfall. I doubt that it is used much anymore but this part looks workable.
Calm water in the bay as we leave the waterfall area. Magic at dock. The small red boat behind Magic is the Sandpiper from Edmonds, WA who were just pulling in. We told them we were leaving so they could have our spot on the dock if they waited a few minutes.

We left Naha and headed to Ketchikan with great water and gray sky.

It is Ketchikan so of course it is raining. We stopped to fuel up as we entered Ketchikan, then found our slip. We met Cindy and Peter? of Queen of the C's who came across the dock to catch our mooring lines. They are from Seattle YC and we have seen them in several places this summer and spoken on the radio but never met in person. So, it was a nice chat. Bidarka and Nelsea are just down the dock.
We visited with the Nelson's, Dave is changing oil, and made some basic plans for tomorrow then we all went out to dinner. Small world shortly after we ordered, the couples from Trillium and Queen of the C's walked in and were seated close to us. We stopped at the grocery store on way back to the boats, one less thing to do in the morning. The fishing fleet left Ketchikan for a several day opening this morning so the store was pretty much picked clean of most fresh vegetables. Not a huge problem for us.
