Aug 6 – Day 96     Cannery Cove

 

Travel from Steamer Bay to Cannery Cove, Burnett Inlet was uneventful.

Visited and toured the Barnett Inlet Fish Hatchery.  Very interesting.  They process millions of eggs daily.  There are about 2200-2500 eggs in each fish and they process over 2,500 fish a day.  That is a lot of fish. 

John and Charlie (manager) took us through the entire facility and told us what happens at each step in the process.  It is amazing and they have a 'well oiled' program.   Their self sufficient shop, where they do metal, plastic, and wood projects was amazing in itself.  Every tool has a 'home' on a wall which looked more like a museum of tools than a workshop, and the place was very clean.   Charlie has worked in the industry for over 18 years and here about 9 years.  His wife home schools their 5 children and her twin sisters 2 children.  Her sister works in the hatchery.  John her sig other has been in the business for over 40 years, is the Asst Manager and handles all of the machinery.

Egg Tanks

The stainless rectangular tanks in the background are for another part of the process.  Many of those were full already as well.

 

They have two, sometimes more smallish black bear who visit the beach at the hatchery in the summer.  Why not, there is a lot of free salmon for the taking.  As long as they stay out of the hatchery all is good.  We only saw this one.
