Aug 8 – Day 98   Meyers Chuck

 

One of the locals, a lady who has been here 61 years, is the post mistress' and resident baker, came by looking to see if we wanted any fresh cinnamon rolls.  She'd had an order for this morning so she baked a few extra and then came around the bay selling them.   We bought the four she had left.  They were still warm from the oven.  We chatted with her for a bit.  There are only 7 people who live year-round in Meyer Chuck now, much reduced from years ago.  The school which once had a full contingent of students has been sold off and is now a private residence.  During the summer the place is filled with residents and visitors. 

Steve, Tyler, and Michelle went out fishing.  Based on what one of the locals told us yesterday they should bring back Salmon.   I tried to get Glen to go but he did not budge from his book.

 

They came back with 6 salmon.  Great job.   They would have stayed out longer but thought it was time to pull anchor so came back.   See Glen should have gone fishing.

Today's plan is to go to Naha as it is only about a two-hour run to Ketchikan.  Tyler flies home tomorrow.

We got to Naha after a smooth crossing and the Nelson's went for a hike before dinner to show Tyler the area.   They said that the trail was as muddy as it was in May (it has been raining) and there were signs of bear in the area …. Foot prints in the mud and on the boardwalk.  There were also a lot more claw and chew marks on the boardwalk boards. 

While they were gone three young people who work at one of the fishing lodges came to the dock to go for a hike.  They had been fishing for fun and gave us a Pacific Cod and a Halibut.  They had not planned on going hiking and did not want to leave the fish in their boat.   We chatted briefly with them and they are all students in Utah during the winter and come up to work at the fishing lodge in the summer.
