Day 21 – June 5th - Blunden to Portland Island
The morning started out with Rain. The harvesters went out to retrieve crab pots. Catch – Tom 1, Steve - 0, Diane - 1 , and Glen – 1. Glen said that he won for size. Diane volunteered to cook them while we cruised today.
The plan is to go to Seymour Inlet to position ourselves for going behind Nakwakto rapids when the tide is right. We headed out. There was a slight burp in that plan as Nelsea somehow got Nellie’s tow line around their prop. The prop cut the line so it didn’t take them long to unwind the line, tie on another and get moving again.
I got and email from friends Jerry and Jenny Nelson who are also up here this year. They said that they were crossing Cape Caution. “Not even swells out here. If you're going around Cape, this morning is very good”
We started out and shortly there was a discussion about the water at Cape Caution and maybe better to do it today and save Nakwakto for later in the trip. That area will be more fun without rain. So crossing the Cape is the new plan for today, with an end point of Portland Island.
The further we went the worse the water seemed to be. Definitely not Liz water. Jerry and Jenny had crossed very early in the morning before the winds kicked up.
A seaplane ‘Grumman’ flew by/over us very low. Glen didn’t tell me in time to catch a photo out the salon window. It was definitely flying low. This was the same Grumman we’d seen fly into Port McNeil the other day. Beautiful plane. This was the same plane we’d seen in Port McNeil.
The cruise plan took another turn when it was decided that some were a little queasy. We decided to enter Smith Sound and headed to Fly Basin in Takush Harbor.
After anchoring it was determined that none of the ladies on this trip liked the crossing. The guys all thought it was fine/fun. Go figure.
Out went the pots, 7 for Prawn and 7 for Crab. It took 2 boats and 2 trips to get them all out.
Dinner on Nelsea and then a movie night on Magic. We watched ‘RESPECT’ the story about Aretha Franklin. Pretty good flick.
