Day 15 – May 30th Octopus to Helmcken Island
We all headed out about 8am. After a few phone calls it was determined that the repair yard in Campbell River would not be able to get Kotare out of the water for a month. So, knowing that their bilge pump would keep up with the leak if run occasionally, the decision was made for Linda and Mike to head back to Anacortes. A call placed secured the arrangements for a haul out as soon as they get there. They will push to Comox tonight. We hope and trust that they will be fine and hope that the damage to Kotare is no too bad. And then there were four.
We are down to 4 – the ‘Fantastic Four’
We turned north and headed to Helmcken Island while in route SeaLife with Diane and Willard aboard hailed us on the radio and said that we were in sight. So, we will be back to 5 boats by this evening.
I’ve already renamed us the ‘Fearless Five’.
Lumber going to market
Helmcken island is along the Johnstone Strait. Johnstone Strait is the main route north and gets a fair amount of traffic. As usual we anchored, and tied to shore on a small island. The main island had signs all around saying Private, No trespassing, Violators will be prosecuted, and Video surveillance in use. We went around the corner and tied to the neighboring island. Interesting as we were anchoring three people walked out onto the point of the other island and stood there watching us. Eventually they walked away. We wondered what all the secrecy was about and what were they hiding. In reality based on the equipment we saw on the land; we think they are about to build a bunch of houses or other buildings.

There was quite a current running past the boats so lines were all tied extra tight.
