June 29 – Moser Island

 

The day started out warm and sunny.  In the afternoon it became windy; and about 9pm it started raining.

 

It was a lazy day.  Beach walk, dinghy ride – checking pots --- about 12 more Prawn and zero crab.

 

 

 

 

Mid-morning we went ashore and checked out the cabin and chopped the wood for tonight’s picnic dinner.  The cabin was built in 1991 as one of the forest service rental cabins.  This one sleeps 5 in bunks, has a wood stove, table, bench seating etc… pretty nice place.  There is a wood storage area behind it that is stocked with wood and the tools to chop it up.  There is a guest book inside which people leave messages about what they’ve seen etc… while there.  About a week ago three bear were seen across the bay and two bear were seen in the grass near the cabin.  The two by the cabin were black bears but one was Licorice (very black) and the other a Cinnamon (reddish brown). 

 

 

 

 

 

In the afternoon a few of us had a fishing contest off the back of the big boats.  How many Perch we could catch on a Herring jig.  3 – 5 per drop seemed to be standard.  The Perch were of course kept for crab and fish bait.  Lenore and Gary had family rule for this game … the loser has to make the cocktails that evening.  Some nights it might be for who does the dishes. 

 

 

About 5pm Glen and I went ashore to the cabin and got the fire started in the outdoor fire pit.  After the fire was started we picked Blue berries, Huckleberries, and Salmon berries, all very near the cabin.  We primarily focused on the blueberries; ending up with about 1 ½ quarts of them.  They will be added to the ones picked the other day and something yummy will be made for a dessert soon.

The rest of the crew came ashore about 6:30pm and we had a great time roasting hot dogs, to go with our Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Watermelon, and for dessert there were Adult S’mores (standard S’mores but after roasting the marshmallow, it is dipped in Kahlua); the group seemed to really like them.

 

After dessert we all just sat around and enjoyed the outdoors and fire; while Brian played the guitar for us.  Jim and Cheryl had a guest join them today and they had him go to a store in Portland and pick up a new guitar for Brian as a gift.  It is a beauty and was a special treat for Brian.  His playing was a treat for all of us.
