June 28 - Appleton Cove to Moser Island

June 28 – Appleton Cove to Moser Island and the Cabin

The Jung’s left us this morning headed for Sitka.  They have a wedding to attend in eastern Washington so they are leaving Spirit Bear in Sitka until their return on the 4th.  They will also get to see their daughter Katie and son-in-law Luke (they joined us in Glacier Bay in 2013); Luke’s sister is getting married.  We’ll watch for their return.

It is sunny and warm today.  Between the boats I believe the ‘keepers’ numbered about a dozen or more crab.  The water is definitely ‘Liz water’ today.  Flat calm and very reflective.  No need for that special bracelet today.  Yippee!

Jim has rented one of the forest service cabins – Moser Island Cabin, for our group to have a party – ‘Winnie Roast and S’mores’ tomorrow.  Of course since I can’t do chocolate, I’ll have to have Some less’s - Saltine crackers with peanut butter and a marshmallow.  Not as popular as S’mores but hey when you can’t do chocolate you have to improvise. I came up with this recipe as a kid at summer camp.  People want ‘some less’ of them.

We dropped our Shrimp pot along the way before entering the anchorage.  Keeping fingers crossed, I like to get some Prawn again.   After 2 hours while we were on a dinghy exploration cruise we decided to check the Shrimp Pot.  Generally, too soon, but what the hey.    21 good sized Prawn.  We dumped them in the bottom of the dinghy and put the pot back down for an overnight soak.

There were 7 guys using the cabin today/tonight.  All friends and or relatives from Sitka and from other parts of the US – N and S Dakota.  We chatted with them for a bit.  They were shocked to hear that our 7 boats were traveling together and from May thru September.  The Dakota guys wanted to jump ship and join us.

It was a hot afternoon so reading in the sunshine was in order, for some.  Others went fishing.  This bay has the same issue as a few others we’ve stayed in recently – large biting flies.  These nasty little buzzards can and do bite thru your clothes, leaving a hole in you but not your clothes.  Not sure how they can do that but they do.

The fly died but so did Diane’s fly killer.    Add one to the shopping list for Sitka!
