July 2 - Bart Island to bay 4 miles outside of Sitka

 

July 2 – Bart Island to a small bay about 4 miles outside of Sitka ….. can’t remember the name of it.

 

Beautiful morning.  Back up to the house.  Glen and Michelle borrowed the car and went into town.  Glen needed something at the auto parts store and Michelle had a package waiting at the Post Office.  Her package contained many bags of Louisiana Crab and Shrimp Boil; something that we’ve all been using regularly and the stock was down.   Great stuff.

We helped the Collier group out by taking all of their extra food and bottles.  I think they shopped for two weeks at the house.   We all left the house at the same time, they heading to the airport and we heading out to another island a couple miles away. 

Anchored up.  Tom and his crew – son Jason and friends Johan and Maria joined the group.  They had been fishing for a couple days.  They had had a rough night last night with high winds with gusts to 50 --- in a supposedly protected bay no less.

 

Great afternoon and evening visiting with 4 boats.   I came back to Magic to do some more computer work in prep of heading back into Sitka tomorrow.  Then the excitement happened.

First Diane slipped and fell down the inside stairs from Sea Life’s flybridge to the pilot house.  Then only minutes later Val while trying to get ice from the flybridge for Diane, went down the outside steep stairs and slipped.  As she fell the hatch cover for the stairs fell and caught her arm.  Glen was up there and all he could see was her hand.  She somehow managed to get her body back to onto the stairs so she was not hanging by her arm any longer.  The raised the hatch to free her arm.  Hearing all the commotion I went back over to Sea Life.  Johan was with Diane and Jason was with Val.  I helped Jason with Val.  She was given some treatment for a nasty abrasion and a decision was made to take her to Sitka for X-Ray and treatment.  Steve took Val, Don, Glen, and I to Sitka in Nellie.  Lucky for us it is still pretty light out around 10pm.  A taxi was waiting for us when we got there.  Don took Val to the hospital and the rest of us visited with Lenore and Gary – Noon Balloon who were docked across the dock from where we docked.  At about 11 Don called and reported. My assessment was correct she had a fracture.   Her Radius.    

Knowing that they would be at least another hour we decided to let Gary and Lenore to bed, so we went back to the big boats.  Steve went to bed and Glen and I waited for the next call from Don.  He called and Glen and Willard went by to pick them up.  It was about 1am when they got back.  Driving in the dark is not fun but according to Willard, it did not phase Glen.   It was a very long day.

Two new projects for Sea Life …. That we have discussed several times over the trip:  Put some non-skid strips on the inside stairs, and figure out a way to lock the hatch open.   I believe those will be done before leaving Sitka.
