July 14 – Chichagof to Goulding Harbor
Happy 32ND Anniversary to Steve and Michelle.
It started out another gray day but a dry one. Prawn pots pulled and a small catch gathered.
Another short run today. As we passed the entrance to Black Bay Glen was some bear on the beach at the end of the bay so he did a U-turn and went into the bay. There were a group of 6 kayaks in the bay (three of them doubles). The kayakers called us on the radio and Glen chatted with them for a bit, exchanging ideas of places to go, etc…. Glen also told them of our bear sighting, they had not seen them. The bear had kept moving across the meadow and were just going into the woods as we approached. Never got close enough to take any photos.
We anchored in Goulding harbor after finding Baker inlet occupied by sailboats. We thought about just announcing on the hailer that we were going to be opening the Fireweed Lounge for Karaoke tonight to chase them out of the bay.
A quick exploratory cruise found a meadow and river outlet. Prime area for viewing bears but no bears in sight. The tide was too low to get up the river very far, so back to the boats for the afternoon, with plan to return later in the evening.
Went back about 9pm and tried to go up the river, not very successful. No bears or other wildlife out. The meadow was basically flooded grassland due to the tide. Of course Glen tried to ‘mow the lawn’ a bit but was not successful. Willard tried too and he got so much grass wrapped around his prop that his engine quit a few times. Boys will be boys.
Terrible photo (raining, low light, wrong lens, and from moving dinghy, but
it shows Willard going up a path in the grass.
