July 8 – Seven Fathom to Redoubt
Another hot day. Nothing special happening. Sea Jay pulled out early headed back to Sitka for some kind of nav system repair. Three of the boats went out fishing. Glen installed some new part to make our GPS system actually work again. Mid-morning watched an Eagle swimming toward shore with a fish of some kind that was too heavy for a flight. They look funny swimming but are actually quite efficient swimmers; using a breast stroke. Reaching the rocky shore created another problem – how to climb up the rocks without using it’s feet which were still holding the fish. It used its wings to pull itself up high onto the rocks then had breakfast. Once the fish was small enough flew off taking the left over breakfast home.
Fisherman - Fish Count:
Sea Life was the first fish boat back with a good sized Ling and a two Black cod.
Nooner – zip
No Debt – 3 Ling and several Black cod
Nellie – Fished for fun only – catch and release, no harvesting done. – Catch of the day were Yellow Eye, Ling, Black Cod.
Once everyone was back we headed back toward Sitka, destination for the night is Redoubt Bay. Crew changes tomorrow for 4 of the boats.
These guys were hand netting salmon. Seems like cheating.
Momma Griz; we did not see the cub but were told she has one.
