June 6 – Hessa Island

 

Morning came and I lounged around while others headed out fishing.  The plan was to stay and fish in this area for at least today.   Beautiful sunny day. 

Fish count for this area: Nicole – 3 cod (one tossed back) and a 30 lb Halibut, Glen – claims something big but nothing landed, Tom – 2 cod, Gary and Pete – zero, Steve, Michelle, and Diane (all going for King Salmon) – 1 cod, Jim – zero, Bryan – a 37 lb Halibut, Robert – 2 Lingcod.   

In the afternoon three of the dinghies (Dodge, Thomas, Miner) took an adventure exploring the area.  Saw lots of Rock, Water and Trees; two Eagles, two wood ducks, 3-4 geese (whitish brown in color, not like Canadian geese – unknown type), and several sea otters.   Of course we found some small inlets that we just had to go thru to see what was on the other side.  Found lagoons of sort, nothing special.  Tom went ashore and walked a bit and found deer tracks and some bones of unknown variety.   On the way back out of one of these I spotted flowers growing on a rock - Chocolate Lilies.   They are small dark chocolate brown blossoms.    Glen moved closer and Nicole jumped off to go pick me a bouquet.  Chocolate Lilies have a rice like root that is edible but Nicole wasn’t able to get any root balls. 

 

 

Back to the boats where Nicole baked some Gluten-free Parmesan Cheese puffs, and everyone gathered for early evening appy’s before dinner.  The Jung’s joined us on Magic for a nice fresh Halibut dinner.  Grilled Chili Lime Halibut, Rice and Salad.  After dinner we took a few minutes to look at the most recent photos from our camera on the big screen.  Movie night?  Nope, we were all too tired so off to bed for reading and sleep. 

 

Glen had called Nicole prior to her coming up and had her pick up a new video camera, and lens for my Sony camera, she also brought up our new ‘hotspot’ so when we are in the areas of coverage getting some internet won’t be as bad.  Service in Alaska is still stretchy but this should help.
