June 15 – Glen’s Birthday Whale Show
After breakfast Glen and Nat went back into town to switch out the props and have the mechanic check things out. He left town a happy camper – new motor, and three new props. Remember Glen’s motto ‘dinghy props are disposable’. Nat also ran up to the store for some additional bottles/boxes (aka wine).
Once they were back aboard we all pulled anchor and headed out to the Esquibel Islands; about 17 miles away. The location was picked due to its close proximity to the salmon area and some fishing.
In route we saw several Humpback whale. One in particular was putting on a show so Sea Life and Magic stopped to watch for a bit. Of course I was watching thru the lens of my camera. I got some good photos of fin slapping, a few tail shots and a full breach or two. We watched for about 15 minutes then continued our journey. It is another beautiful sunny day, and pretty warm all things considered.
The entrance to our bay of choice was quite interesting. Go straight, turn right, now turn left, etc…. around rocks and kelp beds. Magic was the lead boat and I was on the bow watching for rocks. Whew, we made it. Sea Life followed our track with Noon Balloon following just behind, with the others in line. Tom went around the island and in via another entrance.
After anchoring the group some went out fishing, and others went out for a dinghy adventure exploring the area. About an hour later we dinghy group were back having seen enough ‘rock, water, and trees’. We also saw a couple eagle and some seals, and lots of kelp. A bit later the fishing crew came back empty handed. They had caught and released one small (baby) Halibut, and a small Rock Cod. They will go out again tomorrow. The plan is to stay here two nights so the fishermen can go out and try ‘catching’. They want to go for Salmon, and apparently the salmon grounds are just around the corner. Humm, around the corner can mean a lot of different things to this group. And exactly which corner did you mean, the next one or the one 5 miles away; a 1 hr cruise can turn into 3 hrs. Time will tell. The fog rolled in and it got cold. So we must be close to the ocean. Glen said the ocean is just around the corner.
Birthday dinner was held on Nelsea – Steaks, Baked Potatoes, Salad, assorted vegetables, and Lenore’s fab baked beans, with Pumpkin Pie instead of B/D cake per the birthday boys comment the day before that as a kid he always got to pick what he wanted for his B/D and he always said Pumpkin Pie.
