June 21 – Day 52     Warren Island to Malmensbury Bay of Kuku Island

 

Longest day of the year.  

It was quite bouncy and rained all night as shown by the couple inches of water in the cups left out on the back deck.   Departure time was set for 8am.   The others gone, Tom and Glen worked to pull the stern anchor.  I’m sure glad Tom was here, as I would not have wanted that job.  The stern anchor was a long ways back, so they let out chain (180 ft of chain) from the bow of Magic just to get to where they could more easily pull the stern anchor.   Tom is great to have aboard as guest, crew, MD  (marine domestic).

 

By the way it is not raining this morning but everything is soaked and the sky is still not clear.  We have a 40-mile run today.  During breakfast (crab omelets and French toast) I asked Tom what was in store today for the crossing.  He said, ‘Don’t worry, you’ll be okay; it will be so foggy that you will not see the waves or rollers coming.’   Before we left we moved a bunch of things from the counters to the floor to keep them from crashing.  I thought about putting myself on the floor but decided the couch was ok.

 

Shortly outside the bay we saw what looked like a low uncharted rock, but it turned out to be a whale.  Very likely the one that gave us the show last night.   So far the water is fairly flat and the sky is brightening. 

 

The water did not stay nice.  At one-point mid trip we came across a pod of about 8 Orca.   Glen took a bunch of photos but unfortunately got nothing as the door for the disk was not fully closed.    We arrived in Mud Cove in Malmensbury Bay about noon.   It is a very well protected and has no rollers bouncing us around.  The sky is bright but still gray, cold, and misty but not rainy.  Most of the group are going fishing for the afternoon.

 

They came back and Tom reported to me that “there were no fish out there”.   But he was lying.   They  brought back a bucket load of fish.

2 black cod, 1 king salmon, 3 ling cod

The other boat got 1 king salmon, 1 ling cod, some black cod, and a halibut

John and his King – 20 lb.

 

The big fish were cleaned, cut, vacuum sealed and frozen.  The smaller fish were our fresh fish dinner. Afterwards we saw a momma black bear and her little cub (clearly born this year) on shore.

It was still very light out at 10:00 pm.
