June 18 – Day 49   -  Trocadero Bay

 

It was overcast when I woke up but it had rained during the night.   There was a deer on the beach in the same area that the bear was yesterday.  It seemed on high alert, looking toward the woods, and did not stop to graze.   I’m sure it was thinking hum, there was a bear in this area not long ago, I’d better keep moving.    I took a couple deer and morning reflection photos. 

   

 

 

 

 

LOL remember, it’s Alaska so if you don’t like the weather wait 10 minutes it will change.

 

 

About 10 minutes after my morning photos the sky opened up and the rain came down in buckets.  

 

That lasted about 10 minutes and then it stopped and the sky went back to overcast.     What’s next?  More rain, it is going to be a wet day.  Humm, we are supposed to do a hike today on some old historic trail.  Let’s see, it’s raining therefore wet.  We are clearly in bear country.   What could go wrong?

 

About 10am everyone put on their raingear and headed off for the days exploration.    We explored by Jetboat and then found a place to go ashore.  We ended up not finding the official trail but walked along the shore and up the delta and river a bit.  The grass was thigh high in many places and was quite wet.  The walk was just under 3 miles which was better than some days where we only walk around the boat. The sky cleared and it did not rain on us at all during the hike.   We did find an old hunters ‘blind’ and a small concrete building with a heavy metal door.  Some wires/cable inside and cables going out into the water.  On the beach were sections of rusted out cable with wire inside.   Likely from an old communications system.    Saw ducks, seal, a few other birds, and a deer, but whew no bear.  But there was fresh evidence of bear in the area.

Back to home base, had lunch and then watched a commercial crab boat come into the bay and put down a large number of pots.   Glen and Dave went out to pull our pots in as we are pulling anchor and moving to a new place to explore. 

 

As we cruised along the sun came out.  What can I say it is Alaskan weather for sure.
