May 8 – Sunday – Mother’s Day
Depending on the weather, water, wind we have thoughts of three destinations today. Forward Harbor, Mound Island, or Port McNeil. Knowing that the winds were up and thus the ride would not be shall we say smooth, we put the lamp a few things onto the floor as we generally do for rough water.
Wow that was some rough water! Everything that could fall fell on Magic. Even the pillows off the beds; books you name it; it was on the floor. The couch with me on it came off the floor once. The entire boat was washed with salt water top to bottom.
We all stopped at Blenkin Sop Bay hoping that when the tide changed things would settle down. Nicole called to wish me a Happy Mother’s Day just as we came into the Bay. After about an hour of waiting, Glen thought it looked better so we headed out. Better it was, for about 1,000 feet, then better was all in his head. The others decided to come join us. Magic and Sea Life beat our way through to Burial Cove near Port Harvey. Miner’s Debt and Nelsea stopped at Port Nevelle, having had enough. Spirit Bear stayed in Blenkin Sop Bay. Those towing their fishing boats definitely had a tough time.
Between Nevelle and the turn to Burial Cove, there was enough wood in the water to start a lumber yard. Tons of logs, and some full sized sized trees in the water,
The ride was full of six foot seas with the occasional series of three rouge waves, and 8 foot drops into holes. Sort of like the worst rollercoaster you can imagine, or as Willard said, it was like riding the bucking bull at the local cowboy bar. Yea Ha! I can’t believe I survived.
Salpare is in Port Harvey tonight, having come up from Forward Harbor earlier in the day. Fran reported that that was the worst water she had ever been in.
Burial Cove was quite pleasant, calm water and little wind. We anchored Magic and Sea Life tied along-side. We had a great evening and dinner chatting about the travels of the day, whose boat had more on the floor, and what was in store for tomorrow. Lucky for us we don’t have to go back out into the Johnstone strait again anytime soon.
Signing off with another crossing story for the books.
Happy Mother’s Day
