May 17 Raining
Raining this morning. We’re about 600 miles into this trip and about ½ way up through Canada. We are headed by Klumtu, a small first nations village, and have found a little cell service so slowed down to make some calls. We will likely be without cell or internet service for about 4 days. The first plan was to stop at Khutze Inlet and stay by the great waterfall there, but since it is a rainy day, the plan has changed to continuing on for a long days cruise on up to Bishop Bay, and maybe spend two days there. The hot springs there would be good even on a rainy day.
Part way up the channel a solo whale was spotted just in front of Spirit Bear. It came up twice then disappeared by into the deep.
The plans changed again. We’re back on the Khutze trail. Set the anchor in 100 feet of water and tied to shore, about 50 feet off shore in 46 feet of water. We anchored just off the waterfall in Khutze, just like we did in 2008 and 2013. In 2008 it was raining lightly, there was snow not far up the hill (we gathered some for a table decoration). In 2013 it was clear the snow was high up the hill. Today it is raining steadily, and I did not see any snow below the cloud layer. A good day to stay inside, do some reading. ‘Built’ a fire on the TV screen to make it seem warm and cozy.
2008 - snow low on the hill, just above the first falls, and some in patches below.
2013 – snow in the upper sections of this photo
2016 – no snow visible except very high up.
Simple dinner tonight – Mac n Cheese, Salad, and Crab.
