Day 95 – August 13
The morning started out foggy but quickly cleared into a beautiful sunny day. We put the kayaks down and explored the area. The water is extremely clear and one can easily see the bottom. There was large assortment of starfish from tiny tiny ones to very large ones, pinks, thru orange and lots of purple. A few brittle star and leather star. There are lots of sun star and the more common purples. There were several 5 armed light colored and a couple sun stars that appeared to be about 3 feet across. The smallest ones I was were about ¾ inch across.
Heard a branch brake on shore and turned to see a large raccoon scurry across the rocks and up a tree. He sat up there looking at us and as I paddled closer to shore he took off through the woods. A bit further around the corner and a very large critter (3+ feet long) leaped out of the water on to the shore and then scurried up the beach and into the woods. My guess was that it was a sea otter but it appeared to have a long broad tail (more like a beaver tail), so not really sure what it was. We continued on and eventually back to the boats. Glen got me the camera and I continued to explore around the small island that we were stern tied to.
The plan was to leave here and head elsewhere but Glen suggested that it was so nice that maybe we should stay another night. It didn’t take long to make that decision, so stay we did.
The afternoon was spent lounging and the guys and Sophie went swimming. This was not Sophie’s idea but she went anyway. She may not speak to Glen for awhile.
Just before dinner the guys decided it was time to check the pots (crab and shrimp). The creature won another round. I’m starting to think these guys know nothing about fishing. If we trying to live off the land and sea, we would have starved on this trip.
There was a mass exodus from the bay this morning and in the late afternoon another fleet of boats came in. There ended up being quite a few less boats for the night.
