Day 11 – May 26   Denman to Rebecca Spit or Hjorth Bay

 

The boys went into Comox to a hardware store in the morning.  Any excuse to go for a jet boat ride.

While they were gone, some of us went to shore to walk the beach.  Tide was low so beach walking was great.

This place is beautiful and in the past has had thousands of sand dollars on the far side beach, not so many today.  There were plenty of purple clam shells on the beach on both sides of the peninsula beach but the sand dollars were pretty much only on the channel (anchorage side) and most were live and under the water.  For those who don't know much about sand dollars when alive they are black and are generally standing on edge in clusters under the water.  Most people think of them as white and lying flat on the sand.  That is true but that is after they have died and dried out.

While I walked the beach I gave a shout out call to Steve Driscoll and Jim Matheson who are currently up in Desolation Sound on their annual fishing trip.  I called their trip 'Two guys, a fast boat, lots of fish, and no wives'.  Hum, that could be a book.   😊    So far they have seen several Orca but very few Salmon.  But they are still having a great time. 

 

When the boys got back from their trip to the hardware store, and we cast off our lines, pulled our anchors and headed out.  Today's destination is the area of Rebecca Spit.

Bidarka and Kotare decided to tie to a dock owned by some friends of Linda's, in Hyacinthe Bay.  They will dig clams and collect oysters at low tide.

 

The other three of us continued to Hjorth Bay about 4 miles away.  The weather report is predicting winds tonight so we wanted to be in a more protected bay.  Glen roamed around a bit cutting between islands looking for that perfect spot.  Glen found a spot which appears to be protected on three sides, anchored, and called the others in to tie to us.   Next was time to take the prawn pots out for an overnight soak.

Dinner for 6 will be on Magic tonight.

Critter count – 1 small mink like creature on beach behind anchorage.  Chris reports seeing one Humpback whale off in the distance while in route today.  Assorted Eagle, Cormorants, and other sea birds.
