Days 8 -9  May 23-24 – Nanaimo

 

Our appointment went well and we got an estimate for replacing our teak deck in our rear cockpit area.  Pricey but what we expected.  Now to decide if we have the work done up here or back in Seattle.  The thought is to have the work done next fall after boating season. 

While Glen was finishing up the appointment I went into town with Tom and Chris to get the few groceries that we wanted; just a few fresh vegetables that we could not bring north across the border.  

 

By noon we were all back at the boat and a good friend from the ski patrol – Jan Vandenbos and his wife Jennifer who live in the area came out to visit.   We moved Magic off the dock and anchored out by Newcastle island.   Next was out to lunch at the Dinghy Dock Pub then came back to Magic where we spent most of the afternoon sitting in the sunshine visiting.

Day 9

Another rather lazy day. Glen, Tom, Mike and Linda all headed back into town to go to the Chandlery (marine store) which had been closed Monday for the Victoria Day holiday.     But we did take a walk exploring Newcastle Island.

Not sure what this flower (aka weed) is but they are all over Newcastle.  Very delicate flowers

 

Found a ‘fixer upper’ boat in the harbor for those in the market.    It says ‘Kelle 1939 Scotland’ on the side.   

Did not realize until now that the boat in the background (just in front of the mast) is Miner’s Debt

In the afternoon Nelsea – with Steve and Michelle, and Bidarka – Dave and Jane Mehlum both arrived after running up from Roche Harbor.   Bidarka anchored out with the rest of us and Nelsea decided to stay on the dock in Nanaimo for the night.  They cleared customs and ran up to the store for their fresh items.   Now we are five boats together.  The Fun Five, the Fantastic Five, the Fearless Five?   Time will tell.   We decided to have the entire group go out to dinner in town to celebrate the ‘real’ start to this trip.  Then everyone went back to their own boats and did whatever for the evening.
