Day 14 – May 24
Prince Rupert to Ketchikan
We made it; we’re in Alaska!!!
The crossing was not too bad. I didn’t get sick this time.
One cruise ship in the harbor. Pulling into dock at 4:15pm (5:15 our ‘old’ time - we'll be on Alaska time for a while now, better reset watches). RHYC members Jim and Marcia Krell ‘Chinoo’ are here as well. We are at the ‘local’s’ end of the harbor as opposed to the cruise ship and what appears to be the ‘touristy’ end of town. It is quite warm out. We’ve rinsed most of the salt off the boat and are sitting patiently for the US customs officers to come down. Several boats entered the harbor at the same time so there might be a wait.
During crossing we saw a couple Humpback whales; too far away for good photos, and some Black Fish playing in the surf.
5:50 pm still waiting for customs. There is excitement on the dock. A boat across the way is taking on water, as the harbor master raced over there with a pump and hose. The lady on board is wet up to her thighs, not sure if she kneeled down or what. 10 minutes later they still don’t have the pump running. It appears that between the seven people there, they can’t start it. The name of the water absorbing boat’s name is Sea Jay’s Dream. It’s a good sized Sport Fisher style boat. 6:06 pm the coast guard arrives on scene and they start getting the big pumps out. Another ‘Sea Jay’ saved in May.
Glen and I are sitting on the back deck in the sunshine talking to a fisherman from the boat next to ours. He is standing on the dock behind us and telling Glen all the good places to go, where not to go, etc… He is by birth a Canadian but has been in Alaska now for 30 years.
Tom called customs to inquire as to when we might expect them, a while longer as they are currently at the airport. Customs officer came down about 6:45pm very apologetic about the long wait. Only two customs officers on duty today and they had 4-5 boats and 3 planes all arrive within 30 minutes. She cleared us quickly. Yippee we can get off the boat. Walked into town and went out to dinner. Back at the boat about 10:00pm.
