May 16 – Happy Birthday Mom (Jane)!
Crossing Queen Charlotte’s and around Cape Caution today. Left Sullivan bay at 7:15 am headed for the ocean. Foggy morning, can’t see but 20 feet off the dock, so we’ll leave anyway. Turns out that within a quarter mile we are in the clear and then each fog bank lifts as we get close. Since Tom’s leading I think it must be his defroster fan working overtime. Weather projection is for 3 meter rollers, since we can’t remember whether the rule was 1.3 or 3.1, we figured rounding it off to 3.3 meters must be ok. Liz not looking forward to day, but has seasick bracelet on at the #3 buzz setting. Water is calm with light tailwind to the Wallace Islands, just south of the Allison Harbor area. We can know see and feel the effect of the ocean waves and it looks fine. As we pass the Storm Islands Liz is starting to look a little green and we get the buckets in place, its time for the bracelets #5 jolt to begin. Well maybe we didn’t start the #5 quite soon enough because Liz is down for the count, not much fun for her. The boat is handling fine and I think the 10 foot rollers are kind of fun but for Liz’s sake we bump the speed up to 16 knots and push our way around Cape Caution and we get to surf the rollers into the Rivers Inlet south Islets and calm water. Stopped in to check out Duncanby Resort and pick up a bit of fuel. $6.51 gal (1.72/ltr). If you’re a fisherperson you might consider checking this place out, it has all been redone including a hot tub gazebo. The manager told us to google “Kayak trek, Seattle, Rivers Inlet” and check out what two guys did a last year. Don’t have internet ourselves so we’ll have to try it later.

Headed north through the Penrose Island maze and then up to Fish Egg Bay and Joe’s Cove. At the head of Joe’s is a lagoon that can only be accessed by dingy at high tide but you got to know I had to try. Didn’t make it and it will only require a little prop straitening. Fish Egg bay is a beautiful area of inlets and islands that is a gunk-holing wonder. The amazing thing is that it is barely mentioned in the cruise books.
