May 10th – Everything is stowed and we are on the boat. If it’s not here we likely don’t need it. It’s been a very busy week.
Day 1
May 11th - 8:05 am Fire in the Hole. Finally!!! Yes, Nicole we ‘Got up and got going’.
Engines were cold this morning, thus very slow to start. Humm, should have turned on the block heaters last night. 8:25am We are off the dock. Alaska here we come, okay Canada first. A great way to spend mother’s day and my birthday … on the boat headed north. 8:40am starting to rain. Due to weather / wind forecast of 28 knot winds in the straights we are heading up the inside. Water off Edmonds is flat, time will tell.
Coming past Camano Island, water getting rougher. Time to put the miracle bracelet on. Should have earlier. I retreated to the salon area to take a nap. Woke up just before Deception Pass when Glen slowed engines to get prepared.
1:30 pm came thru Deception Pass on outgoing tide with incoming waves. Standing waves of about 8 feet. Pretty for photography but not pretty for being on a boat. Thank goodness for cabinet blocks; everything in upper cabinets tried to escape. Boat went straight up and then straight down several times. Glen drove while I tried to brace myself in the galley holding cabinet doors tighter and refrigerator. Refrigerator wanted to tip out of its wall slot. Outside Deception pass was rough through Rosario Straits until Lopez pass.
3:00 pm heard call from Sea Jay to the Coast Guard. “Taking on water, will go down quickly if this keeps up.” Yikes, that’s buddy Jim. His position was just south of Spieden Island about ½ way from Jones. We were at Up Right Head off Lopez, not close enough. Aquaholic another 38 Bayliner was closer and headed toward him. Jim and Cheryl launched the dinghy and were safe. Vessel assist got there first at 3:15pm, and got pumps going. When we arrived about 3:25 Sea Jay looked like she was floating okay. Cheryl in the dinghy, Jim onboard with the Vessel Assist crew. We stood by for awhile and after checking with Jim to find out he was only 30 minutes from being under way after being helped by 2 vessel assist, 1 salvage, and 1 coast guard vessel, we headed for Roche to top off tanks before crossing the border tomorrow.
5:00 pm sitting at RHYC outstation at Roche Harbor. Sea Jay pulling into harbor under own power. The issue was a zinc plug on the riser that came out/off, leaving a hole for the engine to pump the boat full of water. With the engine off the level was high enough that boat was back filling through exhaust outlets. Not a good thing. Vessel assist pumps and several boat units later, all was well. Everyone is safe and that is all that really matters.
About 8:00 had a lovely dinner with Jim, Cheryl and several of their Twin Commander associates. Wow what a day. Happy Mother’s Day to all.

We're following Miner's and your trip daily. Tom is having a difficult time sending or receiving email so you probably won't be able to contact him until you're within VHF range. They say they'll be waiting at Lund or Squirrel Cove. Have a wonderful trip.

First of all Happy Belated Birthday Liz! Sounds like a fun and adventurous first day. I can't say that those waves sounded like fun.
