May 28 -
Punchbowl to Walker Cove
Pulled the
anchors about 11am and headed out. Plan
is to end the day in walker Cove but first we'll check out the next inlet,
Fjord. The sky is sunny, water basically
flat with only a little wind chop. This
inlet is full of high rock walls topped with snow, waterfalls, and trees. There are no 'beaches' or what we would call
beaches in Alaska. The rock walls just
go straight down into the water.
Occasionally where there is a river inlet there is a meadow of
sorts. No wildlife seen today as of
yet.
Glen found a
waterfall big enough to wash the boat, so he decided to give the front deck a
splash. He nosed in and under so that
burgee and forward deck got a good wash down. Hard to take a photo when one is getting wet!,
so likely no great photo. Reflections
tried it too. But when they backed away,
they miscalculated and backed over their tow line for Flec. Nat surveyed and thinks that the line might
not be around the prop as both props still turn so maybe just around a
rudder. Line had to be cut and Flec was
put on a short leash for the rest of the day.
So much for
the boat wash. As soon as we got out of
the inlet and headed up the channel we were in wind and white caps, then bigger
seas, tossing us like a cork. Things
started crashing to the floor, the refrigerator door opened but thankfully
nothing fell out. First things first,
my bracelet had to go on and fast. Then
closed the fridge, and locked the upper cabinets. Made my way to the salon and tried to pick
up the stuff on the floor. Bottles,
vases, and stuff on the credenza had gone to the floor as had the lamp. Well more accurately the lamp was upside down
on the floor and basically hanging from its cord. Not much left to move down
but secured what I could, then plopped myself down on the couch and buried
myself in the pillows and blankets, to find my safe spot. Sure enough it worked I fell asleep and when
I woke up it was to the noise of the anchor being deployed. Glen tied us to shore and then Reflected
tried to come in. Due to winds decided
to try another spot a few miles further up the main channel and then hang a
left at 'Clod Point'. Everyone agreed
and headed out.
In route Tom
started looking for ski runs again on the hills. They looked interesting but there were a lot
big cornices as well. I was looking thru
the binoculars and saw a small slide tumbling down the hill. Some of the cornices appear to be 20+ feet
high, over these nice looking slopes, not my idea of a good ski run.
Tom checked
out Clod Point and gave a report, discussion followed and a decision was made
to push on for another 2 hours and go to Shrimp Bay. Plan to stay there two nights. If all goes well we should be there by about
6:30pm. Today is Mary Mehlum's birthday
so it's Mexican Night (her choice) for dinner. Taco Tuesday. We also have a birthday cake hidden on
Magic and ice cream in our freezer for her celebration.
With a name
like that we should find some shrimp!
Shrimp Bay is yet another beautiful place we have decided to stay two
nights. Yippee.
