June 23 -- Petersburg
We took a dinghy exploration
tour of Dodge cove and its surrounding area before leaving for the travel up
the Narrows.
Narrows were running with us
much of the time so gained 2 knots in speed.
Doesn't sound like much but anything helps. It's a beautiful sunny day. Pulled into Petersburg and got moorage for
all three boats. All 6 boats are in
town today. Jason Miner flew in this morning;
Doug (off Rendezvous) flew out. Chris
Miner and Dean Wilson (Fran Sharp's brother in law who has been on Magic) fly
out tomorrow afternoon and Glen's sister Maryann joins us tomorrow
morning. Petersburg must be a crew
change stopover. We are moored in the south marina, which is
very different from the north marina that we stayed in five years ago. Still a lot of fishing boats but many more
pleasure boats in this marina.
I am using this stop to try to
get caught up on emails and ski patrol work that I need to get done.

June 24 Petersburg
change of crew
I woke up early and took a walk
around town from 6 -7am. They are
getting new paving and sidewalks on the main street of town. Not much else has changed since 2008. One thing I did notice was that the doorways
and yards are not decorated with flowers, chairs, silver vases etc.... as it
was in 2008. Actually looks rather old
and drab. Some of the same boats are
still there, sitting in the marina covered with moss and growing grass etc...
on their tops. I chatted with the
Harbormaster for a bit and discovered that he was raised in Edmonds and hung
out at the old Haines wharf as a teenager.
Haines wharf is about 8 houses north of our house. When I mentioned that he said he remembered
an old house up on the hill in that spot.
The same lot and house but it looks totally different now; very little
of the original 1905 house is still visible.
Maryann (Glen's sister), arrives
today her plane came in at 10:30 and she jumped in a cab. Glen picked her up at the harbormasters
office. Dean was in town making
arrangements for purchasing more fish and having that and what he had caught
shipped home. He and Chris Miner are on
the same flight to Seattle late in the afternoon. Chris is going home for some 'grandbaby' time
and Dean is headed back to Colorado. It
has been fun having Dean aboard Magic.
Crew change completed, Grocery
shopping done, time to fuel up and get out of Dodge wait I mean get out of
Petersburg. We are headed for Thomas Bay,
Miner's Debt and Nelsea were a couple hours ahead of us so they should have
picked a good spot to anchor.
The water was a bit rougher on
this leg of the trip and there were lightning bolts in the sky. When we reach the anchorage there were 27
knot winds and it was raining. As we
approached the boats there was lots of commotion with people were running
around and the dinghy was rushing around the outside. It looked like a Chinese fire drill. Turns out they had a problem and ended up
cutting a line and then thought they were going to run over the line. We decided to anchor by ourselves and let
them figure out their issues. John and
Jason came over and took our stern line to shore. Once we were secured the other two boats
pulled up their anchor and moved over to 'the mother ship'. Seems people like Glen's anchoring. Just
after we were all anchored and tied together the sky cleared and the sun came
back out. Yep we brought the sunshine
with us. It was still a damp cool
evening. Light dinner and bed for at
least the Magic crew.
