July 27 – Swanson to Juneau

We are headed into Juneau today.   We will be doing provisioning, and a changing of the crew.  Maryann (Glen’s sister) is flying in the early afternoon today.  Dave May a friend from the Mt Baker ski patrol is arriving tomorrow morning.  Shawn and Kat will be leaving us tomorrow as well.  It has been fun having them on board.    We should also be meeting up with the rest of the floating Subdivision.  It will be interesting to hear what they did during this past week. 

Juneau also means a Costco run for provisions.  We really don’t ‘need’ all that much but who ever heard of ‘need’ having anything to do with a Costco run. 

All seven boats of the Subdivision are in Juneau today, all in Auke Bay, spread out around the marina, the place is packed.  Of course Sea Life and Magic were positioned on the outside of the breakwater (means rougher water) and at the furthest point out from shore.   A long walk, and on an unlit dock at night; luckily some of the fishing boats left lights on.

 

Update on Connor and Kyle --- our semi adopted kayakers.   Tom told us that he spotted Connor and that he was visiting them on Miner’s Debt.  We went over to hear latest.  Kyle was injured – torn muscles or something like that and had to cut the trip short leaving for home from Pelican.  Turns out that Connor was on George Island up by the gun emplacement and saw Magic heading out from Elfin Cove.          

Connor shared some of his photos with us and told us about his adventures.  What a great trip this has been for him … to be able to retrace his family history and stand in places and touch things that his great grandfather used 100 years ago.  He will be in Juneau a few more days and then will be heading back home to New York.  Later in the summer he will be moving to Missoula Montana for grad school, so we told him to stay in touch.
