May 14th – Naha Bay
Glen and Steve went to check the shrimp pot --- a few but not enough for a everyone's dinner. The pot went back down for another soak. They put out crab pots too.
Skid ramp for getting small boats up into the lake
The group went for a hike up to the other end of the lake. There has been some trail work done on the sections closer to the falls, picnic area and small dock. They have added a lot of new gravel to the trails and put in some log stairs in places. Nice work. Further up the lake the trail needs a good deal of work. There is old board walk in places, with bridges over marsh areas, but much of the boardwalk has seen better days. Downed trees across the trail, rotted or missing boards on the boardwalk, and slippery rocks make it somewhat interesting. Our hike took almost 4 hrs. The board walks in Alaska are great since the tundra is often wet and mucky. The animals also use the board walks, some calling them 'bear highways'.
Odd combination at bible camp – Skunk Cabbage and Daffodils
There was evidence of bear in the area but they were hiding. Saw deer tacks too. In the past we have seen bear and deer here.
Back to the big boats, hot showers for some to get rid of the mud. The guys went for a boat ride with Glen in the Jet boat. They made it up into the lake and zipped up the river past the church camp to the rock falls, looking at where we had just hiked but from the water side perspective, 1 bear, 1 gravel bar, 2 rocks found to get out of the lake. When they came back they switched boats to check the pots, we caught two small crab – throw backs, and about 3 dozen prawn. Okay we won't starve tonight.
